Skydeck Chicago
Skydeck Chicago

You're coming to Chicago for three days of talks, workshops, and hallway conversations at PHP Tek 2027, April 27–29 at the Sheraton O'Hare in Rosemont. Great. Now let's talk about what you do when the sessions wrap up and you're still buzzing with ideas about that new PHP feature, that testing strategy, or that Laravel trick you just picked up.

Our first pick in the Not Your Normal Trip to Chicago series is a big one, and we mean that literally: Skydeck Chicago on the 103rd floor of Willis Tower. It's 1,353 feet above the street, and it has a feature that will make your phone's camera roll a lot more interesting: The Ledge.

Not Your Normal Trip to Chicago is a series of fun things to do in Chicago with your family and friends while you're here for PHP Tek 2027 (April 27–29, 2027). Whether you're extending your stay, bringing the family along, or looking for something to do with fellow attendees after the sessions wrap up, each post in this series highlights a place to eat, explore, or enjoy that goes beyond the usual tourist list.

What is The Ledge?

The Ledge is a set of five glass-floored balconies that extend about four feet out from the side of the building. You step through a door, out over the city, and look straight down through the floor at Wacker Drive far below. Each box is built from three layers of half-inch laminated glass, engineered to hold up to 10,000 pounds. In other words, it's far sturdier than your nerves will tell you it is.

It's one of those "I can't believe I did that" moments that people talk about for years. It's also a fantastic thing to do in a group. Watching a coworker inch toward the glass while a friend gives them a very confident "it's totally fine" is half the fun.

The view alone is worth the trip

On a clear day, you can see up to 50 miles and four states: Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Below you, the whole city is laid out like a model. You can pick out Millennium Park, Navy Pier, Soldier Field, and the long, curving shoreline of Lake Michigan.

Late April is a lovely time to go. The city is waking up from winter, the trees along the lakefront are turning green, and the light at the end of the day is golden. If you're a photographer (or just someone who likes a good group shot), plan your visit for the late afternoon and stay into the evening. You'll get daylight, sunset, and the city lights coming on, all from one spot.

Getting there from the conference

PHP Tek is held at the Sheraton O'Hare in Rosemont, which is a big part of why the conference is so easy to attend: the hotel is steps from O'Hare with a free airport shuttle, so there's no rental car to worry about. Getting downtown is just as simple. The CTA Blue Line runs from O'Hare through Rosemont and into the Loop, and the ride takes about 36 minutes. From there, Willis Tower is a short walk or a quick hop on another train.

Skydeck is located at 233 S. Wacker Drive. Here's a simple plan for an afternoon:

  • Attend your last session of the day, then grab a quick bite.
  • Take the Blue Line downtown and get off near the Loop.
  • Head up to Skydeck, take your photos, and enjoy the view.
  • Stay downtown for dinner (we have more ideas coming in this series!), then ride back to Rosemont.

Tips for a great visit

Book a timed ticket ahead of time. Skydeck is popular, and buying online before you go usually saves you time in line. Every ticket includes access to The Ledge and the observation deck. Check the official Skydeck site for current prices, hours, and any add-on packages such as sunset experiences.

Check the weather. Visibility makes a huge difference. Chicago weather in April can swing from sunny to gray in an afternoon, so look at the forecast and be flexible. Since the conference schedule is packed, you may want to pick your free evening as late in the week as you can and keep a backup plan.

Bring a friend or five. The Ledge is at its best with company. Somebody has to take the photo of you standing over the void, and somebody else has to stand there looking nervous in the background.

Go early or late. Skydeck is open 365 days a year, and hours change by season, so check the day you plan to visit. Mid-morning on a weekday tends to be busy, and later in the evening can be calmer.

Turn it into a conference meetup

One of the best parts of PHP Tek is the people. You may have chatted with someone in the community for years in Slack, on Mastodon, or in a GitHub issue thread, and this is the week you finally meet in person. A trip to Skydeck is a fun, low-pressure way to build on that. Nobody needs a name badge on the 103rd floor.

Here are a few ways to make it happen:

  • Post in the conference channels. Drop a note that you're heading down on Tuesday or Wednesday evening and see who wants to join.
  • Organize by interest. Laravel folks, DevOps folks, and the "I just came for the workshops" crowd can each grab a group.
  • Make it a speaker and attendee hangout. Speakers love talking to the audience outside the session room, and this is a perfect setting.

If you're bringing your team from work, it also makes a great group outing. You'll get a shared memory that has nothing to do with a sprint retro.

Bring the family and stay a little longer

Here's something we hope you'll think about: PHP Tek doesn't have to be a "fly in, fly out" trip. Chicago is one of the best cities in the country for a family vacation, and Skydeck is the kind of attraction kids and adults both love. If your partner, your kids, or a friend has always wanted to see Chicago, a conference week can be the perfect excuse.

Arrive a day early or stay through the weekend after the conference wraps on April 29. You can attend sessions during the day while your family explores downtown, and then meet up for Skydeck, dinner, and a stroll along the river. The Sheraton has special discounted rates for conference attendees, and the free airport shuttle makes coming and going a breeze. Extending the stay is often a smaller step than you'd think.

Don't forget the reason you're here

Of course, the main event is still the conference. PHP Tek is the longest-running independent PHP conference in North America, with multi-track programming, hands-on workshops, and a community that's been coming together for 19 years. You'll leave with new skills, new friends, and a list of things to try on Monday morning.

If you haven't grabbed your ticket yet, head over to phptek.io to see the schedule, pricing, and group rates. Bring your team, bring your family, and give yourself a reason to see Chicago from 1,353 feet up.

Stay tuned, because this is just the first stop in our series of things to do around Chicago that go beyond the usual tourist list. See you in April!
