2. Millennium Park and the Loop

Hop the Blue Line and in about twenty minutes you're in the heart of the city. Millennium Park is the postcard: stand under Cloud Gate — "The Bean" — and watch the skyline wrap around you. It's free, it's iconic, and it takes fifteen minutes or three hours depending on your mood.

Right next door, Maggie Daley Park is a knockout for anyone traveling with kids: a wildly imaginative play garden, climbing walls, and wide-open lawns. In late April the surrounding gardens and the Michigan Avenue tulip beds are coming into color, so it's a beautiful, low-cost way to spend a morning before the day's sessions or a relaxed afternoon after the conference wraps. Just across the street sits one of the world's great art museums (more on that next).

3. World-Class Museums

Chicago's museum bench is deep, and late April — before summer crowds — is a smart time to visit. The Art Institute of Chicago, steps from Millennium Park, is one of the finest art museums on the planet, home to everything from Monet and Van Gogh to American Gothic. Give yourself a couple of hours; you'll want them.

For families, point yourself at the Museum Campus on the lakefront, where three heavy hitters sit side by side: the Field Museum (say hello to SUE, the largest, most complete T. rex ever found), the Shedd Aquarium, and the Adler Planetarium, which also happens to have one of the best downtown skyline views in the city. Any one of them is an easy, kid-approved day — a great option for a partner and children while you're heads-down in a workshop.

4. See the City That Invented the Skyscraper

If you build things for a living, you'll appreciate a city obsessed with how things are built. The Chicago Architecture Center river cruise is consistently rated one of the best tours in the country: ninety minutes on the water with an expert guide walking you through the buildings that made Chicago the birthplace of the modern skyscraper. Spring is when the season gets going, and it's a fantastic group outing — equal parts relaxing and genuinely nerd-satisfying.

Want the view from up high instead? Ride to the Skydeck at Willis Tower and step out onto The Ledge, a glass box cantilevered 1,353 feet over the street, or visit 360 Chicago on the Magnificent Mile and lean out over the city on TILT. On a clear April evening, either one is unforgettable.

5. Catch a Ballgame — It's Baseball Season

Here's a perk of a late-April conference: baseball is back. Both Chicago teams are playing at home throughout the spring, and catching a game is one of the most quintessentially Chicago things you can do. Wrigley Field, home of the Cubs, is a 110-year-old cathedral of a ballpark, ivy on the outfield walls and all — a bucket-list stop even if you're not a baseball person. On the South Side, the White Sox play at their park downtown-adjacent. Check the schedule when you book; an evening game makes for a perfect end to a conference day, and a day game is a fun family outing. (Bring a layer — April nights by the lake get cool.)

6. Eat Like You Mean It

You can't come to Chicago and not eat well. The obvious move is deep-dish pizza — Lou Malnati's, Pequod's, and Giordano's all have their devoted camps, and arguing about which is best is practically a local sport. But don't stop there: grab an Italian beef (dipped, hot, the whole experience), work through the city's incredible food-hall scene, or venture into neighborhoods like Pilsen, Chinatown, and Devon Avenue for some of the best and most diverse food in the country. It's the ideal setting for the kind of long, unhurried dinner where the best conference conversations actually happen.

7. Stay for the Weekend

PHP Tek wraps on Thursday, April 29 — and the timing this year is almost too good. C2E2, the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, runs April 30–May 2, 2027 at McCormick Place, right on the heels of the conference. If you've ever thought about turning a work trip into a long weekend, this is your excuse: one of the biggest pop-culture conventions in the Midwest, the same weekend you're already in town. It's a blast for families and a fun contrast to three days of PHP.

Craving something quieter and free? The Garfield Park Conservatory is one of the largest conservatories in the country — acres of lush greenhouse rooms that are especially wonderful on a cool, damp April day, and admission is free. It's a lovely, low-key way to decompress before you head home.
